Fifteen years ago,
in California…
I started a Tai Chi practice with my good friend Gayle Yoshimoto. We also took a Qigong class and at that time I enjoyed Tai Chi for the meditative moments they brought me while sharing calm and peace with my friend. When my family and I moved to Rhode Island, I serendipitously found Michael Corvese while my son was in karate classes at Villari’s‘s studio. While my son moved his way up to his purple belt, I worked on calming strategies with Qigong and got to see Taijiquan in a more martial arts style practice. Michael has a way of guiding beginners through the martial art forms of Taijiquan and advanced students through the deepening of their practice. Michael’s classes emphasize patience, discipline, and the continuous journey of self-awareness of the posture, breath, & movement!
Recently, Michael and I had the wonderful opportunity to meet at Grafik Coffee. His love of astronomy and his new Qigong series made him the perfect feature for this month’s newsletter.

Michael’s Unique Blend of Wellness & Wonder
Michael has been practicing Qigong and Taijiquan (Tai Chi) since 2013. After 25 years of struggling with stress and anxiety in unhealthy ways, he discovered the eastern arts of qigong and Taijiquan. Inspired by a visit to Qingcheng Mountain, considered the birthplace of Taoism, in Chengdu, China, Michael began his study of eastern philosophy and medicine. These practices lead to a change in both physical and mental states that caused a pivotal transformation of body, mind, and spirit. He has been sharing the benefits of this practice with family and friends for several years.
Michael is a Taijiquan/Qigong instructor at Villari’s Martial Arts Center since 2023 and is continuing his educational studies with Master Jesse Harding, learning advanced Taijiquan, Qigong, and meditation techniques.

Starlit Reflections directly from Michael:
Being a science geek by nature, astronomy has been an important part of my life for over 40 years. I enjoy the peace and quiet of a clear night with my telescope, finding objects and pondering the incredible distances involved while contemplating the utter vastness of the universe. Whether it is the Moon, planets, star clusters, or far off galaxies, there are a plethora of objects to view and enjoy. Astronomy is the easiest and most accessible way for amateurs to engage in science. From visiting a local observatory, viewing through a personal telescope, or just using binoculars, there are myriad objects that can be found and enjoyed by anyone with only a very rudimentary knowledge of the sky. Simply looking at the night sky and identifying constellations can be a most rewarding experience, using only a free, downloaded star chart. Any way you experience it; it will be a memorable event that may lead to future explorations of the night sky.

One of my favorite memories with Michael was when he set up a telescope pointed towards the sky in the direction of where Saturn would be, during a cloudy night. Minutes before we arrived he said the clouds parted and we were able to see Saturn. My jaw dropped in awe as it looked as though a picture was taped to the end of the telescope. I cannot even describe the feeling beyond being in absolute awe. I had never seen Saturn as I did that night outside of a text book or online. I am so grateful to have people like Michael in my life, making connections and building a wellness community.
Guiding others to draw golden-white light from above or inviting awe through his telescope, Michael leads with intention, helping many see the world with a sense of wonder.
